Tropical Cyclone Dylan to affect Queensland coastal communities

The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed the naming of Category 1 Tropical Cyclone Dylan forecast to affect Queensland coastal communities between Cardwell and St Lawrence (south of Cairns, including Townsville).

Tropical Cyclone Dylan is currently forecast to cross the Burdekin coast southeast of Townsville early on Friday morning (31 January).

A wide area of the north and central Queensland coast will be affected with:

• Abnormally high tides and associated storm surge,
• Damaging gale force winds with gusts of up to 120km/h,
• Widespread daily rainfall totals of 100-300mm until Saturday.

Heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding is expected for the Herbert and Lower Burdekin and parts of the Central Coast and Whitsundays districts today (Thursday), and will extend inland tonight and tomorrow (Friday).

• Riverine flooding is possible in the coming days in the above areas.
