More snow forecast for Tasmania over the weekend

30/07/2015

Snowy conditions are forecast for Tasmania over the weekend and into early next week.

Bureau of Meteorology Regional Director for Tasmania, John Bally, said repeat snowfalls across the highlands are forecast which could see road closures for several days.

“Cold air, associated with a broad low pressure system well to the south of the state, will bring showers, with snow forecast for low elevations in the west and south between 400 and 600 metres,” Mr Bally said.

While conditions look favourable for snowfalls to low elevations, the amount of snow will be related to forecast rainfall totals that remain difficult to quantify.

"We have had several occasions this winter when snow has fallen between 300 and 400 metres, but not for prolonged periods.

“With the coldest air on Monday, at this stage, snow could fall to very low levels, meaning snow in Hobart is possible,” Mr Bally said.

The Bureau of Meteorology will issue warnings, for specific regions as required for road users, sheep graziers and bush walkers. Marine wind warnings are also likely.
