Temperature records broken in New South Wales

03/01/2013

New South Wales has experienced record-breaking temperatures over northern and central inland regions today (Friday 2013).

The extreme temperatures seen across NSW today were associated with the widespread heatwave that has seen large parts of central Australia bake during the past week.

Walgett reached a maximum temperature of 49.1C at 3.05pm today, breaking its previous record of 48.5C recorded on 13 January 2013.

This is the highest temperature recorded at any NSW station since 1939, when 50.0C was recorded at Wilcannia.

Other NSW records broken today include:

• Mungindi 47.8C – Previous record 46.8C on 12 January 2013

• Narrabri 47.8C – Previous record 44.2C on 13 January 2013

• Coonamble 47.6C – Previous record 46.7C on 13 January 2013

• Moree 47.3C – Previous record 46.1C on 29 January 1932

• Tamworth 44.5C – Previous record 42.5C on 12 January 2013

• Coonabarabran 44.0C – Previous record 42.6C on 4 January 1973

• Mudgee 42.5C – Previous record 42.2C on 7 January 1964

Further records are possible tomorrow when official maximum temperatures are transmitted from additional Bureau of Meteorology climate monitoring stations.
