Retirement of Bureau Director Dr Rob Vertessy

01/03/2016

Director of the Bureau of Meteorology, Dr Rob Vertessy today announced he will retire from his position on 29 April 2016.

Dr Vertessy this morning told Bureau staff he made his decision so he could spend more time with his family after an active public service career.

After a distinguished career in science and water policy, Dr Vertessy came to the Bureau in 2008 as the then Deputy Director, Climate and Water. In 2012, he was appointed Director.

Dr Vertessy has successfully led the organisation through a period of great advancement in meteorological science and technology and reinforced the Bureau’s position internationally as a leading meteorological information agency.

In his time with the Bureau, Dr Vertessy was elected to the World Meteorological Organisation Executive Council and as a fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.

This morning Dr Vertessy told staff that working with the Bureau has been the highlight of his career. He said he felt very privileged to have led an agency with such a noble purpose and one endowed with so much professionalism and commitment to public service.

The Department of the Environment will now commence the recruitment process for a successor.
