Rain eases across south-east Queensland while flooding continues for some communities

15/05/2022

Issued at 12:00pm, Sunday 15 May 2022

Heavy rain has eased across Queensland with light to moderate rainfall expected to continue for the next few days in eastern and south-eastern Queensland.

Numerous flood warnings are current across the state ranging from major to minor, with the most significant flooding occurring in the Mary River, in the upper creeks and tributaries of the lower Brisbane River, and along the Condamine-Balonne River system.

A major flood warning is also current for Cooper Creek and the Thomson and Barcoo rivers.

At Gympie, Mary River peaked at 16.01 m Saturday evening and is likely to remain above the moderate flood level (12.0 m) during Sunday.

Minor to moderate flooding is occurring across many catchments in southern and central Queensland.

Due to the saturated catchments, any further rainfall may cause local creek and river rises or prolong existing flooding. There is also an increased risk of falling trees, even with relatively low wind speeds, and landslides.

Late this week, showers are possible across central and eastern Queensland. Conditions are not expected to be as heavy or widespread as the past few days.

Hazardous surf conditions in Queensland have now eased, with a hazardous surf warning for Fraser Island Coast, Sunshine Coast Waters and Gold Coast Waters cancelled Sunday morning.

In NSW, rainfall has eased in the Northern Rivers since Friday evening. Flooding is no longer expected along the Tweed, Brunswick, Richmond and Wilsons rivers. However, several flood warnings remain including in the Orara and Clarence rivers.

Due to the evolving nature of this weather event, communities in the affected areas are advised to stay up to date with warnings via the Bureau's website (www.bom.gov.au/warnings/qld) or the BOM Weather App and follow the advice of emergency services.
