Weather update for Victoria and Tasmania
18/07/2022
Issued: Monday, 18 July 2022
Parts of Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales will continue to experience cold conditions this week, as a large high-pressure system strengthens over south-east Australia.
Cold mornings with minimum temperatures dropping 4-8 degrees below average are expected, with widespread frost, possibly severe across some inland parts where temperatures are likely to drop below -2C. The cold nights will extend into eastern South Australia and towards central Australia on Wednesday and Thursday as well.
Daytime maximum temperatures will also remain several degrees below average across large parts of eastern Australia for most of this week.
The cold front saw snow levels in Tasmania drop to ~300m around Hobart early Monday morning, with snow settling as low as 150m for brief periods in the west and south. In far southern Tasmania, snow flurries were observed at sea level.
This low-level snow has prompted the issue of both a Bushwalkers Alert and a Road Weather Alert for large parts of Tasmania – for snowy and potentially icy roads and adverse conditions.
Snow levels in Tasmania are expected to lift today, but generally remain at 800-900m into early Tuesday. More broadly across the south-east, snow levels across Victoria and southern alpine NSW will remain around 800m into early Tuesday.
Sheep Graziers Warnings remain in place for both Tasmania and Victoria for cold and breezy conditions following the front.
Conditions are forecast to ease on Tuesday as the next ridge of high pressure moves in, with settled conditions expected on Wednesday through to Friday.
Communities are encouraged to keep up to date with the latest Bureau forecasts and warnings through the Bureau's website and BOM Weather app and follow the advice of emergency services.
