Rain and storms for eastern Australia as flooding continues in NSW

Significant areas of moderate to major flooding continues through most parts of inland New South Wales, with severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, and gusty winds possible in parts of NSW and Victoria today.

Flood watches are current for much of Vic as moderate rainfall is likely to lead to renewed river level rises, with many rivers possibly reaching minor flooding once again in the coming days.

Generally low to moderate rainfall is forecast, mostly through eastern Vic and NSW. However, catchments throughout the east are very wet and many dams are at capacity, so waterways will be very sensitive to any future rainfall.

In north-east NSW and south-east Central Qld, severe thunderstorms with large hail, damaging winds and heavy rainfall are likely during the afternoon and evening with giant hail also possible in south-east Qld and north-east NSW.

The upper low-pressure system will move off the NSW coast on Thursday, with rain and storms clearing, but showers will continue along the NSW coast with strong and gusty winds.

Another upper low-pressure system will move in south-east Australia over the weekend, spreading showers and isolated thunderstorms across much of NSW and Vic, with these conditions easing on Monday.

Flooding is likely to continue for many weeks and months to come. With dams full, ground saturated, and snowmelt over the coming weeks, even light to moderate falls may lead to renewed rises and additional flooding.
