New BOM Weather app update to help communities better prepare for severe weather events
11/12/2024
The Bureau of Meteorology has introduced a warnings map layer in the BOM Weather app, providing communities with a clear view of current weather warnings and the areas they apply to during severe weather.
The map layer will include ten types of weather warnings; coastal hazards, fire weather, flood, hazardous surf, heatwave, marine wind, severe thunderstorms, severe weather, tropical cyclone and tsunami.
Decision Support Services General Manager Chantal Donnelly said the new map layer is another way the Bureau equips Australians with the information they need to make informed decisions.
"We're constantly looking to improve our services wherever possible, and we know people already use the BOM Weather app to get valuable information about rain, wind, temperature and warnings quickly and easily," Ms Donnelly said.
"Users can now see active warnings relevant to them, and the areas they apply to, right on the map. We're giving users the information they need to make informed decisions, in a quick snapshot view.
"This new feature is in addition to the other ways of keeping track of warnings in the app – users with warning notifications set up will continue to get those, and you can always navigate to the Warnings tab to view Australia-wide warnings as well.
"We encourage everyone to stay up to date with our current warnings and forecasts, especially throughout higher risk weather seasons, and this new function will make it even easier to access simple weather information."
Ms Donnelly said to access this new functionality, people needed to update or install the latest version of the app, and the app will work on all supported operating systems.
"We also encourage people to offer feedback about their experiences with the app so we can continue to improve the way we deliver essential weather information to communities.
"Users can lodge their feedback through the app feedback form with as much detail as possible to allow Bureau experts to continue refining and tailoring the BOM Weather app to meet their needs."
