Destructive winds forecast for Victoria

30/07/2014

The Bureau of Meteorology is warning that destructive winds and snowfalls are forecast to affect Victoria overnight tonight (Wednesday 30 July 2014) and on Thursday (31 July) and Friday (1 August) this week.

Gale force winds averaging 60-80km/h with peak gusts of 130-140km/h are forecast for alpine areas. The rest of the state can expect widespread winds averaging 50-70 km/h, with peak gusts of 100-110km/h.

The conditions are the result of a strong cold front expected to enter western Victoria early Thursday morning, and continue across the State during the day.

Winds are expected to be strongest ahead of the front as it moves across the State.

On Friday, a burst of very cold air is forecast to bring scattered showers with the chance of hail and snow down to 500 meters. Snow is also expected on the hills surrounding Melbourne.

As conditions are likely to change rapidly, go to the Bureau's website for the latest weather information and warnings.
