Kalgoorlie weather radar back online

13/05/2014

The Bureau of Meteorology has completed construction of a replacement Kalgoorlie weather radar with real-time imagery now available on the Bureau's website.

The replacement radar has been constructed immediately adjacent to the previous radar site. All installation and quality assurance testing is now complete.

Bureau of Meteorology Western Australia Acting Regional Director, Grahame Reader, said the radar will benefit Kalgoorlie-Boulder and wider Goldfields region.

"The installation of the replacement Kalgoorlie radar ensures a continuation of radar services for the Goldfields community well into the future," Mr Reader said.

"This new radar offers continuous radar imagery, where previously radar imagery was unavailable for two hours each day due to the tracking of weather balloons in the upper atmosphere."

"A range of industries rely on the information provided by Bureau of Meteorology in the planning of weather sensitive activities; such as agricultural producers in crop spraying, construction workers in planning painting or concreting and operations of the mining and resources sector," he said."As well as radar coverage, the community has access to the new Next Generation Forecast and Warning System through MetEye, a service providing forecasts out to seven days for all locations in Western Australia."
