Cairns weather radar back online
15/12/2014
The Bureau of Meteorology has completed work on the Cairns weather radar on Saddle Mountain today with real time imagery now available on the Bureau’s website.
Bureau of Meteorology Queensland Regional Director, Mr Rob Webb, said all installation and quality assurance testing is now complete.
“The upgraded radar will benefit those working and living in the Cairns and wider North Queensland region as we move towards the heart of the wet season,” Mr Webb said.
“The new facility also ensures a continuation of radar services well into the future.
“We understand the value the community places on the radar information and appreciate the patience shown as we undertook this vital upgrade.
“As well as radar coverage, the community has access through the Bureau’s website to satellite images, automatic weather stations and 7 day forecasts from the Next Generation Forecast and Warning System. Through MetEye, the Bureau provides forecasts out to seven days for all locations in Queensland, as well as the rest of Australia.
“Queenslanders enjoy a range of outdoor pursuits and accurate information about the weather can help people ensure they are well-equipped for the weather conditions.
“Bureau of Meteorology staff have worked hard to ensure the installation and testing of the radar was completed as quickly as possible.”
The new Doppler functionality will be added to the Saddle Mountain radar in mid-2015 to deliver sharper resolution and better accuracy.
The Cairns (Saddle Mountain) radar is available on the Bureau’s website at:
