WEATHER UPDATE: Fire weather over parts of Queensland and NSW, 11 November 2019

11/11/2019

Senior Meteorologist, Grace Legge: Hello from the Bureau.

Very dangerous fire conditions are developing on Tuesday through east New South Wales and into southeast Queensland. Catastrophic fire dangers are forecast for the Greater Hunter, Shoalhaven and Illawarra, and extending into the Greater Sydney region, affecting those more forested areas to the west of Sydney.

Severe fire dangers are forecast through southeast Queensland with Severe to Extreme extending through eastern New South Wales, all the way down to the border with Victoria. These areas extend over dozens of ongoing fires which have had significant impact on those communities in recent days. Any fires in these areas will be fast moving and difficult to control or suppress.

Please follow the advice of your local fire agencies if you're in any of these areas affected. These weather conditions are being driven by a cold front that's moving up the east coast on Tuesday. Hot, dry and gusty conditions are expected ahead of the change, while the cool change may ease fire dangers a combination of drying gusty winds and a shift in wind direction means people in the impacted areas will need to remain vigilant.

The cold change will extend into Queensland on Wednesday which will see elevated fire dangers as the heat moves up the east coast. Unfortunately conditions remain dry with little to no rainfall in the forecast and the situation will remain dangerous through the week. This is an evolving and dangerous situation so please stay up to date with the latest warnings and forecasts on our website and app and listen to all advice from your local emergency services.
