Severe Weather Update: elevated fire danger in SA and heat building in the east, 18 Nov 2019
18/11/2019
Senior Meteorologist, Grace Legge: Hello from the Bureau. Here with an update on the heat and fire dangers expected over much of southern Australia.
On Saturday and Sunday we saw areas of Western Australia break November daytime records, some of which are shown here and include Perth that broke its record on Saturday.
For Sunday the heat moved further east and we saw records broken over much of the state some of these sites have records going back over 70 years. This hot air mass is being pulled from northern Western Australia further south by those stronger northerly winds and will be pushed to further east ahead of an approaching cold front.
This heat will be entering South Australia on Wednesday which when combined with these strong northerly winds will lead to elevated fire dangers through much of the state and we could see November temperature records broken.
As the heat moves over eastern Australia, Victoria is likely to see a spike in temperatures before that cool change moves through. For New South Wales and Southern Queensland though this heat is going to be sitting over the area, which unfortunately is leading to this area of severe heat wave conditions which will continue through the week and into the weekend.
While these elevated fire dangers and heat wave conditions continue, please follow all advice from your local emergency and health services and keep up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings on our website and app.
